How to run a pool tournament
- 1
Choose the game and race
Pick 8-ball or 9-ball and how many racks win a match (for example, race to 2 or race to 3). Post the house rules by the tables.
- 2
Set up your tables
Each table is a field in the template, and matches are assigned across them automatically.
- 3
Use double elimination
Double elimination is the standard for pool events: players go to the losers bracket after one loss, and the grand final resets if the losers-bracket player wins it.
- 4
Enter players in pairing order
The first two players on the list meet in round one, then the next two. Spread your strongest players across the list so they don't meet early.
- 5
Record winners and share
Tap the winner after each match and undo if needed. Players check the read-only link to see which table they're on next.
Pool bracket size cheat sheet
Time estimates assume about 20 minutes per match (a short race) with 2 tables in use.
| Teams | First-round byes | Rounds | Single-elim games | Double-elim games | Approx. time (single / double) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | 0 | 2 | 4 | 7 | 40m / 1h 20m |
| 6 | 2 | 3 | 6 | 11 | 1h / 2h |
| 8 | 0 | 3 | 8 | 15 | 1h 20m / 2h 40m |
| 12 | 4 | 4 | 12 | 23 | 2h / 4h |
| 16 | 0 | 4 | 16 | 31 | 2h 40m / 5h 20m |
| 24 | 8 | 5 | 24 | 47 | 4h / 8h |
| 32 | 0 | 5 | 32 | 63 | 5h 20m / 10h 40m |
Game counts include the third-place game. In double elimination, add one more game if the grand final resets. Rounds are winners-bracket rounds.
Frequently asked questions
Should a pool tournament be single or double elimination?
Double elimination is the usual choice for pool, because one bad rack shouldn't end a player's night. mybracket.app runs both, with a losers bracket and grand-final reset in double elimination.
How many players can a pool bracket have?
From 2 to 32. If your count isn't a power of two, byes are added automatically in the first round.
Do players and spectators need to sign up?
No. Only the organizer creates a free account. Players and spectators open the read-only share link in any browser, with no sign-in, no download and no ads.
